The updated Cummins fuel system uses two engine-mounted fuel filters: a larger Stage 1 filter and a smaller Stage 2 filter. Both factory filter housings use plastic caps that must be removed and reinstalled during routine service. Repeated tool use, temperature changes, and exposure beneath the truck can eventually leave the factory caps rounded, cracked, or difficult to remove.

The factory caps also lack convenient, dedicated bleed points. After replacing the fuel filters, air can remain trapped in the fuel system and contribute to extended cranking—often referred to as a “long-start” condition—while the system reprimes.

Each cap incorporates an accessible bleed valve, allowing trapped air to be released from both filter housings before starting the engine.
